What is this place? Why?
I’m here from Atlanta for work, flew in Thursday. I’ve been to most major cities in the US, including the other big ones in Florida (Tampa Bay is cool, Orlando is okay, Jacksonville is a straight up shit-hole).
This city is unlike any other I’ve ever visited. It has incredible art and architecture, and some of the best food I’ve ever eaten, but it’s also 85° with 90% humidity in October. On top of the unbearable heat, it’s as expensive as staying in Manhattan. For the life of me I could not imagine myself living here. Granted I’m staying on Miami Beach which I gather is super touristy and this super expensive. But If it’s this hot and miserable in October then July just must be hell. The only other place I can slightly compare it with would be Brooklyn and Queens, but worse.
So, what is it about this place? Why does anyone live here in this god forsaken swap at the ass end of the country? And why is it so popular with tourists? There must be something I’m missing.
(I want to add a caveat that I’m not complaining and/or trying to disrespect this place. It’s cool, and I can see it being amazing in like… February. Everyone has been so welcoming and friendly but I cannot understand the appeal of this place year round.)
