This year is the first time downtown Denton will be transformed into a real-life Halloween town. Admire the spooky decorations or go to one of the many haunted events for people of all ages to enjoy. Take part in the Haunted Hotline scavenger hunt, in which participants will explore Denton to uncover the evil witch’s spell book and end her reign, or explore the many “boo-tique” markets. Other activities include Halloween movie nights, a Halloween roller derby on Oct. 26, and the Boos and Booze Bar Crawl on Oct. 12. A family-focused Day of the Dead Festival, with pine-box races and the Twilight Lantern Parade, takes place Oct. 25-27.

Trick-or-Treat Extravganza Join us if you dare for a Halloween scare on Thursday, October 31 from 5:00-9:00pm at our Trick or Treat Extravaganza, Presented by InTouch Credit Union! This family friendly event will take guests throughout the center for all kinds of tricks, treats, and even some surprises along the way. The event will include: Trick-or-treating stops throughout Grandscape Character meet and greets Live DJ Plus, “I Put a Spell on You” stage performances from your three favorite witches! Don’t miss out on all the fun as we enjoy a BOO-tiful Halloween night. We’ll see you there! Candy will be available while supplies last. “I Put a Spell on You” stage performances will take place at 6:00pm and 8:00pm. Looking for parking? Use our free parking garage.

Mid-Cities Greek FoodFest This year we have added loaded gyro fries to the menu, as well as baklava cheesecake - no calorie counting allowed! Our popular saganaki booth is located outside the main tent so everyone can watch their favorite flaming fried cheese. In addition to the famous Ouzo Slushie, The Opa Bar will feature three signature cocktails this year: the Aegean Mojito, the Athens Mule and the Ouzo Fizz. Satisfy your sweet tooth with some baklava or loukoumathes (Greek honey puffs), capped off with a Greek coffee or frappe. Check out many made-in-Greece items and food products at the Marketplace. For those curious about the Greek Orthodox faith, there are tours throughout the weekend of our Byzantine church. The bookstore carries literature, jewelry and other a faith-related items. And come dance with us! The youth and young adults of our parish will perform multiple times - showcasing traditional Greek dances in original costumes. Sunset Soiree at Kaleidoscope Park When Kaleidoscope Park officially opens on Saturday, Oct. 5, it will be the culmination of years of hard work and planning by the Kaleidoscope Park Foundation and its volunteers, as well as its partners at Communities Foundation of Texas, the City of Frisco and HALL Park. It is only fitting, therefore, that those founders and the entities who have sponsored and funded the development of this world-class art and horticultural destination be feted at a ticketed party prior to the official Grand Opening. On Friday, Oct. 4, guests will be treated to the Sunset Soirée: A Walk in the Park at Frisco’s Kaleidoscope Park. This first-look event offers a curated guest list the chance to stroll the park and hear from those who were fundamental in its creation and completion. After arriving at the new HALL Park, guests will have the opportunity to stroll the park while enjoying small bites donated by Vestal’s Catering, gelato provided by Gelato la Boca, beer provided by Rollertown Beerworks, cocktails by Socorro Tequila, and spectacular sips of HALL Wines donated by Craig and Kathryn Hall. Guests at the ticketed event will have the first official chance to view Janet Echelman’s magnificent Butterfly Rest Stop, the largest and most important piece of public art to debut in North Texas in years. In keeping with the bridge that Frisco has built between art and technology, the evening will end with a drone show presented by North Texas’ Sky Elements.

PAWTOBERFEST Pawtoberfest is a dog-centric section within Huffhines Harvest Fest held on Saturday only. Brig your pup and join us for a number of fun activities including pet costume contests, puppy yoga, arts & crafts, and a variety of booths including dog apparel, pet treats, dog training, pet boarding, rescue organizations, and vet clinics. Also enjoy the activities available as part of Harvest Fest such as the pumpkin patch, live music, food vendors, beer/wine vendor, and more! Enjoy a day in the park with your pooch while sipping craft beer, enjoying goodies from the food trucks, listening to live music and shopping from vendors. Other activities include a pet agility course, photo opportunities and the annual pet costume contest. Oct. 19 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

FRISCO OKTOBERFEST The 5th annual Frisco Oktoberfest includes authentic Oktoberfest music and dancing, a variety of local shops and businesses, traditional German cuisine, stein hoisting competitions, keg rolling contests, stein races, an official brat eating competition and plenty of beer. Festivities are taking place Saturday, October 5th from 11am-9pm at The Star! Enjoy all your favorite German cuisine, cheering on the stein hoisting competitors in the Biergarten, browsing the local vendors, participating in Oktoberfest games, dancing the chicken dance and drinking delicious Oktoberfest bier! Oktoberfest Games include: Wiener Dog race, Bier stein hoisting contests, brat eating contests, keg rolling and stein relays! (The full schedule can be found on the event website!) OKTOBERFEST AT FLAG POLE HILL IN DALLAS This year’s annual event at Flag Pole Hill, just north of White Rock Lake, features a kids zone, a market village, beer and food that includes everything from brats to pizza and Hefeweizen to Kolsch. Activities include keg tapping, a stein holding contest and music from Red, a Taylor Swift tribute band,and country artist Cory Morrow. Details: Oct. 5 from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. $12-$25; free for kids under 4.

Oktoberfest this weekend: What to know before you go The free festival in the city’s historic downtown runs Friday through Sunday! McKinney is welcoming fall this weekend at the city’s 17th annual Oktoberfest festival. The event will feature Hofbrau and local beers, activities for children, live music, German food and contests — from wiener dog races to a brat-eating contest. Oktoberfest runs rain or shine from Friday through Sunday over 14 blocks in the historic downtown square. The festival runs from 2 to 11 p.m. on Friday, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free, and food, beer and activities can be purchased from vendors. From 2 to 4:30 p.m. on Friday, beers will be discounted during the event’s happy hour special. The event’s opening ceremony, parade and keg tapping will kick off at 6 p.m. Friday.

Kawaii Club at Dallas Public Library Lakewood Branch Library welcomes everyone to our Kawaii Club. There will be snacks, anime, and crafts! The first 30 minutes will be for everyone to grab snacks and get craft materials and instruction. The second will be for us to watch an anime episode together complete the craft and enjoy our refreshing Japanese Snacks. Your package of rotisserie chicken, plus fries and salad, can be a delicious dinner any day of the week or a one- or two-person weekend lock-in meal if you plan to stay home and marathon a series.

Every time I go to Kirin Court, I’m amazed at the prices. Dumplings, egg rolls, steamed buns and the like are just a few bucks. This dim sum restaurant is an especially great stop if you’re dining with friends who love to share.

Food From Galilee Nestled in University Park’s Snider Plaza, this humble Mediterranean spot serves loaded gyros, shawarma sandwiches and a plethora of appetizers that allow for variety on a budget, such as kibbeh, hummus and cabbage rolls. At lunchtime, meals are served on styrofoam plates; dinnertime gets an upgrade to something sturdier. The zingy chicken and rice soup is part of my order on every visit. Platters are generously portioned and come with rice or cucumber yogurt and a choice of soup or salad.

One of North Texas’ best bakeries has opened in Dallas’ Half Price Books La Casita Coffee is open now, serving croissants and espresso. Coming soon: brunch. La Casita, a croissant shop and brunch restaurant that started in Richardson, opened Aug. 20, 2024, in the former Black Forest Coffee. La Casita Coffee sells espressos, matcha drinks and the pastries it’s become locally famous for: croissants, cruffins, muffins and the like.
