A vegan and a meat-eater enter a plant-based Ethiopian restaurant. A couple of hours later, they both leave completely satisfiedâand with the newfound knowledge that vegan nacho cheese is far superior to the real (fake) stuff. Such miracles can happen at the second location of Ras Plant Based in Greenwich Village. The menu here is essentially the same as their original spot in Crown Heights, except for the injera nachos, which you must order, because thatâs where that melty vegan cheese comes into play. Add on a few cocktails and a mercato platter, with lots of spongy injera for scooping up creamy ground chickpeas, and youâve got a feast for friends who love legumes, and those who'd normally rather be eating meat.

I had a great dinner at Kalye (âStreetâ in Tagalog). Itâs an amazing, affordable Filipino restaurant on Broome Street specializing in Filipino street food. Kalye, a small, unassuming restaurant, delivered an amazing parade of unique, delicious food based on the ownerâs chef heritage, as seen on the restaurantâs page. âOur menu is full of Robâs cherished family recipes, offering a variety of mouth-watering dishes that will make you feel like youâve traveled straight to the Philippines. From our famous Ube Sliders to other traditional Filipino favorites, every bite is a celebration of our culture and love for good food. Whether youâre here to dine in, taking food to go, or having it delivered to your doorstep, Kalye makes enjoying Filipino food easy and convenient.â Totally enjoyable unique experience. Where To Hang Out By The Water? When you want a reminder that itâs summer, head to the Brooklyn Crab! Look out at the water from Brooklyn Crab, and youâll see giant container ships sitting on water thatâll remind you Brooklyn is certainly not a beach town. Even still, this Red Hook spot definitely feels summeryâmaybe itâs the fake sand or crab traps, which will take your mind off the fact that youâre next to warehouse parking lots. Order crab legs, popcorn shrimp, and a few pitchers of beer, and then take off your bib and play some cornhole. Itâs also on the same block as Hometown Bar-B-Que, if youâre looking for surf and turf.

Il Totano The first Top Chef winner, Harold Dieterle, of the late Perilla and Kin Shop, teamed up with Alexandra Shapiro, of Flex Mussels and Hoexters, to open Il Totano, an 80-seat restaurant, hoping to capture the spirit of a 1970 Italian holiday vacation. Aged fish inspires the centerpiece of the menu and the space, which includes a dry-aging fridge in the dining room. In addition to crudo, the menu revives Perillaâs spicy duck meatballs. Donât miss the pork cotolette, pounded thin and lightly fried, topped with bitter greens and whole anchovies.

Son Del North In places like Los Angeles, itâs much easier to find burritos without rice: Not so much in New York. Son del North opened last month, a tiny takeout counter thatâs already cementing itself as a welcomed addition to New Yorkâs burrito scene, thanks in part to its homemade Sonora-style flour tortillas. ![NYC Must Try: Foxface Natural đŚ
Foxface Natural is a continuation of NYCâs famous Foxface sandwich shop which served unconventional meats - camel, elk, hare and more. They change their menu every few days to weeks, but there are several that stay on longer, like the kangaroo tartare which I came to Foxface just to try! Must tries are definitely any dishes that has their super popular fluke (melts in your mouth!) as well.
Also, all meats are sustainably sourced and from non-endangered species! This was the epitome of casual fine dining - absolutely amazing and Iâd love to go back again!
If these items are ever on the menu again, find my must-tries below. Pro tip - make a reservation!
What I ordered:
- Point Judith Squid - black aguachile, fermented tomatillo, crispy berkshire pork ear, pickled ramp
- Tajarin Pasta - our sake cured mullet roe (karasumi)
- [must-try] Kangaroo Tartare - warm spices, charred eggplant, sardinian flatbread
- [must-try] Maine Uni - wood oven roasted seafood quenelles, nantua sauce (seafood)

Hometown Bar-B-Que Youâre probably going to have to wait an hour in line to get this (mostly) Texas-style barbecue. Once you make it to the counter of this Red Hook institution, though, the brisket, giant beef rib, and the lamb belly bĂĄnh mi will all be incredible. If youâre with a group, add some brisket tacos and Jamaican jerk baby back ribs, neither of which are essential but are still pretty great. Plan to visit on a weekend and make a day out of it.

Gage & Tollner At once an emblem of Old New York and a relative newcomer, Gage & Tollner was revived well over a century after first opening at this location in 1892. A trio of Brooklyn hospitality pros, including chef Sohui Kim, reopened the august institution to quick acclaim in 2021. Why we love it? G&Tâs landmarked interior, which hosted several unrelated businesses before its latest unveiling, is beautiful: enveloped in crimson velvet, gilded and appointed with towering mirrors to reflect all its splendor. The menus are terrific, too, abundant with steaks, chops, seafood towers, sensational fried chicken and best-in-class desserts. The recent addition of weekend lunch service makes the tough-to-book Brooklyn jewel a little bit easier to get into, and G&T recently started making its sensational pastries available for pre-order. Check out Sunken Harbor Club upstairs, too, if you get the chance.

These restaurants make you fall in love with New York again! Lillo Cucina Inside this Cobble Hill restaurant, youâll find six tables, 17 seats, and one man who runs the show. But once you taste Lilloâs beautifully simple dishes (almost all under $20), like sauteed artichokes swimming in olive oil, and a saucy rigatoni alla gricia, you'll understand why it's been going strong since 2017. Get a heap of tiramisu before leaving. Amore Pizzeria When you need to get away, head to Amore. more is just Amore. Itâs a no-nonsense joint in a strip mall where friendly-enough employees have been churning out consistently perfect pies since the 1970s. The cheese is greasy, the lights are fluorescent, and the crust-to-sauce ratio is, yes, on point. Red Hook Tavern Everybody orders the burger, and nobody shares. That means that at any given moment at this corner spot on Van Brunt Street, 40 burgers are being consumed by 40 people at 40 seats. The silent, side-by-side consumption might make you feel closer to 39 complete strangers than you have to anyone in months. Reserve a spot at the bar, and sip on a martini, stirred by the bartender who also likes to bake, and made some rainbow cookies tonight. Suddenly, New York feels like a very small town.

Cadence, East Village What is it? A vegan soul food restaurant led by executive chef Shenarri Freeman. Cadence is part of Overthrow Hospitalityâs group of NYC plant-based restaurants. Why we love it? The southern-fried lasagna with pine nut ricotta, spinach and a red wine Beyond Meat bolognese is a can't-miss dish.
