Discover Hidden Gems: Design District Exploration

Hello, I'm planning on visiting Miami in January for a rest/relaxation-type trip (not a partier; not a drinker). I'll be alone, and I'm a young Asian female (visiting from Canada). I'll be staying in South Beach. Should I be super concerned about safety as a solo female? I won't be out late at night, but I might have a couple of earlier mornings (~6AM) where I have to walk a few minutes to get somewhere. I keep to myself when I travel (not interested in meeting new people).

Pasta e Basta is a cozy Italian restaurant in Midtown that you already know we love. This time we stopped by to try their new brunch menu and we’re what you need to know 👇🍝 Their menu currently offers a variety of paninis and pasta trios, perfect for sharing and for those who always want a little bit of everything 👀 We kicked off our meal with the Panino Polpette e Mozzarella, but the Trio Romano stole the show. For $69 you get this pasta tower that includes Rigatoni Carbonara, Tonnarelli Cacio e Pepe and Rigatoni Amatriciana. And the best part? You can now customize your own trio for $79. For dessert we had the Nutella crepes and the tiramisu which is always🔥 PS: If you’re brave enough to dine with a toddler they’ve got a kids menu too and a whole lot of patience ❤️

If you are looking for a secluded island in Miami to spend the day and disconnect, then here is one of my favorite spots! The Picnic Islands are a small group of islands within the city of Miami. They are located just north of Biscayne Island in Biscayne Bay, just east offshore from the Edgewater and Upper Eastside districts of the city. The islands are uninhabited, but several of the group have beaches where boaters and picnickers frequent. They are generally named for the mainland city parks that they are located next to in the bay. The southernmost one is Pace Picnic Island, located off Pace Park. There are also Morningside Picnic Islands Park and Legion Picnic Islands Park located directly off of Morningside Bayfront Park and Legion Park, respectively.

Lincoln Road Farmers’ Market Before big-name stores and theaters commanded Lincoln Road, the pedestrian mall was well known for its weekend farmers market. Over the years, this small operation has grown from a few tables on the eastern end of the strip to a large fair that stretches nearly the entire length of the road. Find produce, housewares, fresh-cut flowers and specialty items like artisanal bread and homemade jams available all throughout. Though open year-round, the farmers’ market is at its most magical when it coincides with the Lincoln Road Antiques & Collectibles Market, which happens every other Sunday between October and May. Art Deco Historic District Miami Ice cream cone pastels, geometric lines and curves, chrome accents and decorative fountains are just a few characteristics that distinguish the iconic buildings of Miami Beach’s Art Deco Historic District. Miami has the highest concentration of Art Deco buildings in the world, and their preservation has saved the South Beach skyline from becoming a canyon of condos. Amazingly, these buildings were nearly destroyed by developers in the early 1970s. Today, a number of the best Miami hotels, and even some South Beach clubs, have maintained their beautiful façades and historical designation.

You’ve probably heard of Vizcaya Museum and Gardens before. But what do you think I meant when I said that its gardens were designed much like a home? Well, Colombian-born architect, Diego Suarez, separated the garden into different sections and created a unique atmosphere to each location. That gave the feel of being like an outdoor home! Some of these “rooms” included the Rose Garden, the Maze Garden, the Garden Mound, and more. Make sure to visit Vizcaya, it is amazing Italian-inspired villa!

Here are some insights on where you can immerse yourself in this vibrant neighborhood.
Discover Contemporary Art Beyond the Galleries
While the Design District is renowned for its impressive art galleries and installations, some of the most fascinating pieces are hidden in plain sight. Keep your eyes peeled for street art murals that bring a burst of color and creativity to the area. Local artists often leave their mark in secluded spots, making your exploration feel like a modern-day treasure hunt.
A particular hidden gem is the De La Cruz Collection, an often overlooked but expansive private collection showcasing contemporary art. Admission is free, making it a must-visit for any art lover. Additionally, take a leisurely stroll around the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami (ICA) complex—not just inside the museum, but around its grounds. You'll find outdoor sculptures and installations that provide both visual delight and thought-provoking messages.
Trending Spots for Culinary Adventures
The Design District is not just about visual aesthetics but also a culinary paradise waiting to be discovered. One of the most coveted local restaurants is Mandolin Aegean Bistro, a lovely courtyard-based eatery serving delectable Greek and Turkish cuisine. For a more eclectic dining experience, KYU offers a menu inspired by Japanese flavors with a modern twist, where the atmosphere is just as exquisite as the food.
Don't miss the Taco Stand, a hidden gem that might not look like much from the outside but offers some of the best authentic tacos in Miami. Pair your meal with a refreshing margarita and soak in the casual yet vibrant ambiance. If you're on the lookout for an indulgent dessert, head to the Crumb on Parchment bakery café, a quaint spot tucked away from the bustling main streets but offering some of the most delicious pastries you'll find.
Chic Shopping with a Local Twist
The Design District's shops aren't just about luxury brands; they're also filled with unique boutiques offering items you won’t find anywhere else. Wynwood's Frangipani is worth a visit for its eclectic mix of locally made goods and eco-friendly products. Similarly, Chrome Hearts and En Avance provide an exclusive shopping experience with fashions and jewelry that feel both modern and timeless.
For those who appreciate artisanal craftsmanship, a stop at OTL is essential. This blend of café and boutique shop offers a range of thoughtful gifts and stylish accessories. Whether you're in the market for high-end fashion or unique trinkets, these stores add a local flavor to your shopping experience that's hard to beat.
Family-Friendly Spots for Relaxation
Although the Design District exudes an air of sophistication, it's also surprisingly family-friendly with several spots perfect for a day out with kids. Take a break from shopping and artistic exploration by visiting the Palm Court, a beautifully designed plaza with open spaces where children can roam freely.
For some educational fun, the Miami Children's Museum offers interactive exhibits and play areas that will keep younger ones entertained for hours. Afterward, head to the Paseo Ponti, a sculpture-filled pedestrian walkway that's perfect for a relaxed stroll with the family, giving you time to savor the district's creative spirit and artistic ambiance.
