Get ready for a charming twist on a Shakespeare classic at Independent Shakespeare Fest!
Avatar Secret Los Angeles

Secret Los Angeles

AS YOU LIKE IT by William Shakespeare at Independent Shakespeare Fest! Fall in love this summer with our As You Like It, a screwball romantic comedy with songs inspired by 1930’s crooner, Al Bowlly. Irrepressible cousins, Rosalind and Celia, fall afoul of the Duke, and make their escape into the Forest of Arden. There, they discover a world of vivid characters and romantic possibilities. When class and gender boundaries shatter, they discover both themselves and a beguiling truth: transformation is always possible. In the hour before the performance, you’re invited to explore the world of the play during an immersive prologue. There, you will have the opportunity to interact with characters as well as learn a few secrets. Once the play begins, you’ll get cozy in your spot and enjoy one of Shakespeare’s most heartfelt and witty comedies. Be advised: although audience members of all ages are welcome and encouraged to come, Shakespeare’s plays all deal with the adult themes that invariably arise in human relationships, and include allusions to both sexuality and violence. This production contains no nudity nor graphic violence. It does however include shameless flirting, double entendres, and may make you want to get up and dance. July 10 - September 1 Wednesday - Sunday @ 7:00 pm

Join Us for the Spectacular Día de los Muertos Celebration at Hollywood Forever!
Avatar Time Out LA

Time Out LA

Día de los Muertos at Hollywood Forever The largest Day of the Dead celebration in California, and we wouldn’t doubt it: art exhibitions, dance rituals, musical performances, arts and crafts projects and food vendors (and crowds) aplenty. This year’s theme, “Tonas and Nahuales,” celebrates the spiritual guides and guardians central to indigenous Mesoamerican cultures, and it’s sure to be a spectacular display, as always. And after a couple of years of being split into two sessions, the 2024 edition will return to an all-day event, albeit one with staggered admission times (10am–2pm, 2–6pm and 6–11pm). Regardless of when you enter the Día de los Muertos event, you can stick around until the midnight close. The glowing, flickering altars look absolutely incredible after dark—though that’s also when the crowds tend to be the thickest. Oct 26, 2024

The city was in the midst of creating epic monuments in what some observers have called the era of ‘Imperial Los Angeles.’ At the same time that L.A. art and culture were elevated to new heights, Century City debuted its landmark shopping center, now operated by Westfield, which is set to celebrate its 60th anniversary October 12-13.

Discover Hidden Gems in Hollywood for Your Next Local Exploration

Hollywood, near Los Angeles, is known for its glamour and star-studded attractions, but beyond the obvious landmarks, there lies a treasure trove of hidden gems waiting to be discovered. Whether you're a resident looking to uncover new favorite spots or a traveler eager to venture off the beaten path, our guide on local exploration in Hollywood has got you covered. Here, you'll find trending spots, secret locations, and adventure-filled opportunities that only locals know.

A Walk Through Franklin Village

Franklin Village is a small, charming enclave nestled in the foothills of Hollywood. This neighborhood is a favorite among locals for its relaxed vibe and eclectic mix of shops and eateries. Start your exploration at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre, where you can catch improv comedy shows featuring both upcoming talent and famous comedians. After a dose of laughter, head over to the Bourgeois Pig for some of the best coffee and vintage ambiance in the area. Don’t forget to check out Counterpoint Records & Books, an indie gem with a vast collection of vinyl and used books.

Secret Stairs of Hollywood

Hollywood is home to numerous hidden staircases, relics from the early 20th century, offering a unique way to explore the city. These secret stairs not only provide a fantastic workout, but they also take you through some of the city's most picturesque neighborhoods. The Beachwood Canyon Stairs are particularly popular, offering stunning views of the Hollywood Sign and a peek into charming hillside homes. Another notable mention are the Music Box Steps, made famous by Laurel and Hardy in their 1932 Oscar-winning short film "The Music Box." Connecting the areas of Silver Lake and Sunset Boulevard, the stairs are also excellent for those seeking some quiet time and contemplation.

Runyon Canyon for an Urban Adventure

For those who crave an outdoor adventure with panoramic views of Los Angeles, Runyon Canyon Park is the place to go. Though it can get crowded, locals know the best times to visit – early morning or late afternoon. Runyon Canyon offers several hiking trails of varying difficulty, making it a popular spot for both casual walkers and seasoned hikers. The Magic Tree is an insider favorite; it's a big oak tree located about halfway through the run that's a perfect resting spot and offers some shade and beautiful city views.

Hollywood Forever Cemetery

One of Hollywood's most underrated and mysterious spots is the Hollywood Forever Cemetery. This historic cemetery is not only the final resting place of countless stars but also serves as a cultural hub. Locals love attending the cemetery's outdoor movie screenings, concerts, and seasonal events like the Día de los Muertos festival. For a quieter experience, take a self-guided walking tour to explore the beautiful grounds and visit the graves of celebrities like Johnny Ramone and Judy Garland. The serene environment makes it an ideal spot for relaxation and reflection amidst the hustle and bustle of Hollywood.

Underground Speakeasies

Hollywood's nightlife is legendary, but some of its best bars are hidden from plain sight. If you're looking for a more exclusive experience, seek out the city's underground speakeasies. The No Vacancy bar is a local favorite, where you enter through a Victorian-style house and encounter a secret room for cocktails. Another hidden gem is Good Times at Davey Wayne's, a 1970s-themed bar that you access through a retro refrigerator door. These hidden spots not only offer unique ambiances but are also prime locations for tasting creative, expertly crafted cocktails.

Family-Friendly Exploration at Griffith Park

If you're planning a family outing, Griffith Park provides countless opportunities for exploration and adventure. The Griffith Observatory is a must-visit for its stunning views and educational exhibits about the cosmos. For a more relaxed experience, take a ride on the historic Griffith Park Merry-Go-Round, a favorite among kids and adults alike. The Autry Museum of the American West, located within the park, offers insights into the rich history and culture of the American West, making it both a fun and educational stop. Finally, don't miss the Los Angeles Zoo, home to a diverse range of animals and family-friendly activities.
