It’s quirky, local and deliciously Cuban, with a cozy midcentury vibe that’s both moody and light-filled. It’s also pretty laid-back and you can grab a legit Cuban coffee during the lunch rush without having to fight several elderly gentlemen, as well as delicious sandwiches that put a new spin on classics. Note: this is not the place to treat as your satellite office; there’s no wifi, and laptops are politely declined. This is, however, the perfect place to catch up with an old friend or take a break from the hustle.

This is a fine dining establishment, so expect a hefty price tag, but it’s definitely worth splurging.

In fact, there’s a little bit of everything, and you really should try something from each section of the menu. As for this writer’s favorites, the rigatoni bolognese, the chicken parm, and the classic tiramisu make for a great dinner.

Miami Spice Dinner at Kissaki Yes, yes, y’all, the holy month for Miami foodies is finally here. August is when Miami Spice is in full swing, and this year many of our favorite restaurants are participating. Luckily, Kissaki is no exception. The South of Fifth Kaiseki restaurant is bringing the heat with its $45 3-course dinner menu. Starters include options like hamachi tiradito with serrano chilis and sudashi-soy or Chef’s signature 4-piece nigiri flight. For entrees, there’s miso black cod or wagyu fried rice topped with a poached egg. Then, for dessert, choose between bruleed torija, bourbon-spiked peach cobbler, or ice cream. We can’t wait. August 15.

Choose from three different locations to enjoy a meal: El Patio on the first floor offers a cool, calm ambiance, Los Balcones on the second floor showcases artwork by talented Oaxacan artisans inside a chic dining room, and La Azotea on the rooftop features upbeat tunes, lush greenery, and plenty of room to spread out. The expansive menu highlights the restaurant’s sacred staples—corn (maíz) and agave—with dishes like fresh guacamole topped with lobster al pastor, aguachile de camarón, tacos, and a fall-off-the-bone pork shank served with Istmeño-style mashed potatoes. Even better, Maíz y Agave offers live mariachi performances three times a week, adding an extra layer to the experience. You’ll feel like you’re in Oaxaca without having left Coral Gables.

We’re lucky that this year the restaurant is taking part in Miami Spice and we get to try a luscious 3-course menu. For only $45 per person indulge in a 3-course meal featuring highlights like umami escargot made with gochujang butter and served with sourdough crostini; boniato gnocchi made with Spanish boniato, rocoto cream, and parmesan crisp; and Cuban pork katsu with a sazon completa panko crust, friseé, and hoisin. Get ready for a culinary adventure that’s as rich in history as it is in taste. The Miami Spice dinner is only available on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays, and reservations are highly recommended.

Barnacle Historic State Park Constructed in the late 19th century, this distinctive home on the water’s edge served as the original residence of pioneer Ralph Munroe. It’s the oldest standing house in Miami-Dade County, having survived hurricanes and other natural disasters, and today operates as a historical site. Kennedy is a charming waterfront park with walking/cycling trails, a dog park, outdoor fitness equipment, volleyball courts and the Instagrammable “Miami”-etched benches that face Biscayne Bay. After a scenic workout or some leisurely dog- and people-watching, cool down with a frozen lemonade from the A.C.’s Icees truck, which has had a permanent spot in the parking lot for more than four decades.

Royd’s It was a sad day when Casa Larios closed its Flagler and South Miami doors, but we’re happy to report that the King and Queen of Miami Cuban cuisine are back! Chef Quintin “Nene” and Maria Teresa Larios have taken over the kitchen at Royd’s, bringing arroz y frijoles to the Redlands. You can once again enjoy the 95-year-old chef’s masitas de puerco and pollo asado along with farm fresh batidos made with produce picked onsite. It’s all bizarrely set amidst an old Western outpost, featuring live music on Saturdays, a dog park and even a pioneertown jail.

Islas Canarias Only one restaurant can make Miamians from all corners of Dade County drive into the deepest depths of West Kendall just for croquetas, and that’s Islas Canarias. They’re so popular, the Miami-Dade commission named an entire street after them. And though this is incontestably the restaurant’s flagship dish, this establishment has been whipping out impeccable family recipes since 1977, like their succulently garlicky palomilla hidden under a bed of glazed onions. Pair your main with a side of their arroz morro cooked with pork rinds, which you can also order at the café and bakery just a mile away. No time to eat in? The 26th Street location touts a drive-through where the number one order is, you guessed it, croquetas.

If you are looking for a secluded island in Miami to spend the day and disconnect, then here is one of my favorite spots! The Picnic Islands are a small group of islands within the city of Miami. They are located just north of Biscayne Island in Biscayne Bay, just east offshore from the Edgewater and Upper Eastside districts of the city. The islands are uninhabited, but several of the group have beaches where boaters and picnickers frequent. They are generally named for the mainland city parks that they are located next to in the bay. The southernmost one is Pace Picnic Island, located off Pace Park. There are also Morningside Picnic Islands Park and Legion Picnic Islands Park located directly off of Morningside Bayfront Park and Legion Park, respectively.

Knaus Berry Farm has earned quite a reputation for its sweet cinnamon buns, so much so that fans usually line up for hours to get their hands on some. And yes, waiting in that line is an essential thing to do. Cinnamon rolls aren’t the farm’s only draw — they also serve delicious milkshakes and you can also pick your own strawberries to take home. And keep in mind that they only take cash!

Lan Pan Café: Contemporary Asian You may stumble upon this unassuming spot while shopping at Dadeland Station, but you’ll go back regardless of whether you need new shoes. It’s known for its pan-Asian mix of Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Thai and Vietnamese plates and is home to an impressive bubble tea bar. If you like your food with some heat, get the spicy Korean tofu stew with pork belly and sausage.
