Metropolis in Miniature 🌆
Headed to see Serena at the Open? Make plans to swing by this incredible Panorama, located just steps from the arena’s main entrance.
The Panorama of the City of New York is located at the Queens Museum, and known famously across the globe. The “helicopter tour of New York without the helicopter” was created as a celebration of the City’s infrastructure for the 1964 World’s Fair. Built by a team of more than 100 people over the course of three years, this MASSIVE metropolis comprises an area of over 9,335 square feet and built to a 1:1200 scale (where one inch equals 100 feet).
Each of the city’s 895,000 buildings (constructed prior to 1992) and every street, park and over 100 bridges are represented and assembled onto sections, comprising the 320 square miles of New York City.
Can you find Manhattan? It measures 70 x 15 feet (!!). The king of the skyline, the Empire State Building is a towering 15 inches tall while the Statue of Liberty is only 1-7/8 inches in height.
The panorama is outfitted with a lighting cycle that circulates from dawn to dusk to night. Other special effects include moving airplanes that take off and land at LaGuardia Airport every few minutes.
It’s truly spectacular and a fascinating visit for all ages.
