Samurai were the hereditary military nobility and officer caste of medieval and early-modern Japan from the 12th century until their abolition in 1868. Originating from provincial warriors, they became a dominant social class, adhering to a strict code of honour called bushidō. They were renowned for their expertise in archery, horsemanship, and swordsmanship, specifically with the katana.
